Chelsea's Boss Maresca Labels Pre-Match Period as His 'Toughest Two Days' at the Club
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca stated that the preparation to Saturday's win against Everton constituted "the toughest 48 hours" he has experienced at Stamford Bridge.
The Italian made a rather mysterious comment in his post-match interview even after securing a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge through finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those points sent Chelsea back into the English top flight's top four, perhaps lightening the atmosphere following a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the side's winless run to four matches.
But, when questioned about Gusto's assist and general performance, Maresca unexpectedly disclosed his annoyance over the previous 48-hour period within the organization.
"The way the lads want to learn has been fantastic and this is the reason why I applaud them - because with so many problems, they are performing admirably after a difficult week," he commented.
"From the moment I arrived at the club, the past 48 hours have been the toughest because several people failed to back us."
Pressed on his meaning, the ex- Leicester City manager elaborated: "Worst 48 hours since I joined the club because people failed to back me and the team."
When questioned if he meant people within at Chelsea, he replied: "In general. In general," before clarifying when queried if it was aimed at fans or the press: "I adore the fans and we are very content with the fans."
Injury and Disciplinary Woes
Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's ongoing injury and suspension problems, remarking they had been without star attacker Cole Palmer for much of the season, in addition to being deprived of key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and forward Liam Delap to two significant injuries.
"I truly applaud the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them minus Moises Caicedo, 11 of them without Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them minus Liam Delap," he explained.
"And this squad, regardless of who is playing, they are doing exceptionally. Today was 5 games in 12 days so for sure when you see Cole Palmer there, we have said many times that he's our top player but we play the vast majority of the season minus our best player.
"We play 5 games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so happy for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to acknowledge because the work from the players is remarkable."
Chelsea's win over Everton consolidated their standing in fourth in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final clash at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle scheduled in the coming days.
Speculation Regarding Maresca's Remark
It was ambiguous what exactly caused Maresca to label the previous 48 hours as the most difficult of his spell as Chelsea manager.
In that window, the coach had traveled back with his backroom team and players from Bergamo, held a training session at the training ground, attended a pre-match news conference where he appeared relaxed, and secured a win over an in-form Everton side.
It was hard to discern whether any specific media reports had irked him, if online comments were a factor, or if it was something deeper from within the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca specifically took care to rule out that it was an issue related to the club's fans, some of whom have still have yet to fully warm to him since his appointment from Leicester in July 2024.
