No less than 64 Killed in Rio de Janeiro's Largest Security Action on Criminal Groups
A minimum of 64 people were killed in a security raid against the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's past.
Four security agents were included in the fatalities during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities said. More than 80 people were taken into custody.
Intense confrontations broke out when about 2,500 security personnel moved in on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization reacted using shooting, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives said.
The United Nations human rights body expressed being "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".
Mission Consequences
The slum neighborhoods close to the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.
Local authorities stated at least 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Many residents were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Residents have described the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the raid started.

Organized Crime Spread
The Red Command group have been expanding their control throughout the region, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.
Local law enforcement reported over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the mission, together with dozens of firearms.
Operation Background
The joint operation by various security forces was preceded by a twelve-month inquiry.
Many of the individuals are considered participants in an organization from the Brazilian state who are currently hiding in the city.
